Self-centering chucks utilize a spiral scroll that causes all three jaws to close on the part at the same time when the outer ring of the chuck is turned in relation to the body. Round or square material is centered quickly and easily. Runout (centering accuracy) is guaranteed to be .003" or less. Because of the number of moving parts, accuracy greater than this cannot be guaranteed with this type of chuck. If greater centering accuracy is needed, an "independent" jaw chuck where the jaws are adjusted one at a time might be needed. Self-centering chucks are the most popular because they offer quick centering and a high enough level of accuracy for most jobs. Reversable jaws are made from hardened steel. This large chuck will hold parts from 3/32" up to 1/3/16" with the jaws in the normal position. Reversing the jaws allows parts up to 2-1/4" to be held. (Note that material held in a 4-jaw self-centering chuck must be accurately round or square or all four jaws will not contact the part.) Two steel spindle bars (sometimes called "Tommy" bars are included to tighten the chuck. For use with Sherline machine tools.
