The cryogenic treatment process uses sub-zero temperatures, down to -300 degrees F, to modify the micro-structure of the steel into a more uniform grain structure that allows you to hone to a fine edge without chipping. Powder metallurgy is not new to turning tools, but until now the available tools were expensive. Crown has succeeded in developing powdered metal tools that provide all the same benefits, but at a reasonable price.
